If you live in Napier or Bredasdorp (Overberg region of the Western Cape), you can have your milk delivered three days a week by The Milkman, a company that has revived the age old tradition of milk delvered to your doorstep. The milk is sourced from two farmers outside Napier - and travels a maximum of 30km to households. It is hormone free and is delivered in reusable containers (glass or plastic) - signifcantly reducing the number of plastic bottles ending up on the rubbish dump or having to be recycled. The Milkman also supplies a range of locally sourced products, many of which are certified organic.
WATERKLOOF WINE ESTATE
Waterkloof Wine Estate produces 'slow wine' on their bio-dynamic estate outside Somerset West. The wine is made using old methods, and the wine farm uses an "(almost) hands-off" approach to the fermentation process.
"Our general approach is to use non-interventionist practices where practical, but as a minimum standard to practice the concept of “sustainable agriculture” throughout the farming unit." The farm has recently added a new "green-machine" to it's workforce - Bessie the mini-Dexter cow. The estate uses the manure of it's own Dexter cows to fertilize the soil. "“The entire estate is treated as a holistic entity and Waterkloof steers clear of conventional pesticides and fertilisers. By using the manure we create new life in soil which was once treated by weed-killers and compacted by heavy tractors" Tel: 021 858 1292
